Mr. Martin has over 34 years of experience in finance and accounting in the oil and gas industry. He has held previous positions as Vice President for Petex Production Company and as Chief Financial Officer for Lewis Energy Group. Scott has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Finance and Economics from Marietta College. Scott is a member of the American Financial Association and maintains numerous contacts in the energy lending arena.
Philip M. Mezey, PE
Co-Founder, Chairman of the Board
Mr. Mezey has over 34 years of engineering and technical experience in the oil and gas industry. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Syracuse University, New York, and a Master’s in Business Administration Degree from St. Mary's University, San Antonio. Phil's business experience includes the position of Petroleum Engineer for Texaco, and Manager of Engineering for Delhi Gas Pipeline Corporation. Phil previously held the position of Director of Engineering at Lewis Energy Group. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the states of Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. Phil's area of expertise includes field operations, reservoir engineering, production and economic evaluation.
Mark A. Norville
Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Norville has worked in the development and exploration business for over 34 years in Texas. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University. Mr. Norville’s experience includes both field and management work in both South and East Texas during his career. Mr. Norville held the position of District Geologist for Clayton Williams Energy, Inc. as well as Exploration & Operations Manager for Stallion Oil Company, where he supervised and ran all of the field operations and business operations of the San Antonio office. Most recently, he was the Vice President of Exploration for Kerns Petroleum, Inc. of San Antonio, where he managed the exploration and development of the Olmos and San Miguel formation for the company from 1998-2005. He has also been active in the AAPG and SPE for over 30 years. He was also President of the South Texas Geological Society from 2000-2001. Mr. Norville’s area of expertise includes field exploitation, production evaluation and development planning for new exploration plays.
Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Friedrichs has over 20 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He began his career in Houston headquarters of Coastal Oil & Gas. In 1997, he joined Lewis Energy Group as the Controller of their Exploration & Production subsidiary, Segundo Navarro. In 1998, he assumed the role of Corporate Controller for Lewis Energy and held that position until 2000. From 2000 until 2004, Mr. Friedrichs worked as a contract Controller for a variety of clients, including a production equipment manufacturer, a large interstate pipeline company and several exploration and production companies. During this time he assisted in the sale of a service company to a large publicly held entity and participated in taking a pipeline company public. In 2004, he helped form BlackBrush Oil and Gas and acted as its Corporate Controller until 2007 at which time he was promoted to Vice President of Business Development. In 2014, Mr. Friedrichs was named Chief Financial Officer of BlackBrush Oil & Gas. Mr. Friedrichs holds a BBA in Accounting from the University of Texas at San Antonio and a Masters from St. Mary’s University.
Dorothy McCoppin, JD
Vice President & General Counsel
Ms. McCoppin is Vice President and General Counsel for BlackBrush. Prior to coming to BlackBrush in 2005, she held that title for Florida Gas Transmission Company, for whom she worked for 12 years. She has also worked for several other major interstate gas pipelines, including Texas Eastern, Tennessee Gas, Northern Natural, and Transwestern, holding various legal positions. Dorothy has practiced law for 40 years, with most of her experience being in the regulated oil and gas industry, specifically FERC-regulated interstate natural gas pipeline systems. Her experience includes oil and gas pipeline gathering and transportation, oil and gas leasing, acquisition, contract, rate and certificate, corporate secretary, litigation, rulemaking, financing, bankruptcy, environmental, enforcement, and compliance and training matters. She has also had experience in municipal law, and was in private practice for several years. Ms. McCoppin has a B.A. from Rice University, Houston, a J.D. from the University of Houston, and an M.B.A. from Our Lady of the Lake University.
Steve Carter, PE
Vice President, Drilling Operations
Mr. Carter joined BlackBrush in 2010 as Manager of Engineering. He is a Registered Professional Engineer with 34 years of experience exploring and producing oil and gas. He has pioneered successful techniques to drill unconventional horizontal wells, including underbalanced pressure with various drilling fluids, and placing down hole equipment. Executed evolving horizontal completion designs for cased & open hole completions, and multiple stage oil and water fracs. His expertise includes the Maverick Basin and South Texas managing operations for a diverse set of carbonate, sandstone and shale plays. Mr. Carter has held engineering management positions at TXCO Resources averaging 80 new wells per year, EnRe Corp, Venus Exploration, and Neumin Production. Mr. Carter received his B.S. in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. He is an active board member of AADE, and SPE.
Vice President, Commercial
Jimmy has a diverse background in upstream and midstream commercial/operations with over 30 years of experience with Shell Oil Co. Following early analytical and planning positions of increased responsibilities, Jimmy worked the last 19 years of his tenure in various commercial and operational roles. He last managed Shell Oil’s onshore US gas midstream positions in Appalachia, the Haynesville, the Rockies, Kansas, the Permian and the Eagle Ford through a commercial and operational staff of nine, as well as serving on the Permian and Eagle Ford asset leadership teams. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration in accounting from Sam Houston State University.
Mr. Walshak joined BlackBrush in January 2008 as a Petroleum Engineer and has worked in a number of roles with increasing levels of responsibility before being promoted to Production Manager in January 2012. His operational experience includes underbalanced and horizontal drilling, multi-stage hydraulic fracturing, production facility and pipeline design, and artificial lift. Jasen has also served an integral role in the application of LPG fracturing technology and recovery in South Texas. Mr. Walshak earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He is involved in the Balcones Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and serves on the Board of the Central Texas Chapter of the American Association of Drilling Engineers.
Mr. Martin joined BlackBrush in January 2008 after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering. He has worked on many unique and challenging projects as a drilling, completions, and production engineer. He has performed hydraulic fracturing with various fluids (LPG, crude oil, mineral oil, acid, CO2, water), wellbore intervention with coiled tubing and workover rigs utilizing a variety of oil tools and remediation techniques, underbalanced drilling using crude oil and nitrogen, artificial lift design, and microseismic fracture monitoring. He was promoted to Completions Manager in October 2015 and has performed nearly 1,200 fracture treatments including over 350 stages using LPG fracturing equipment. He has been a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers for over 10 years and served as the Scholarship Chairman for the Balcones Section of the SPE for 5 years.
Matthew T. Koehler
Exploration and Development Manager
Mr. Koehler is Exploration and Development Manager for BlackBrush. He joined BlackBrush in 2011 as a Geologist and led the company’s San Miguel asset team. His experience includes unconventional field exploration and horizontal field development, including target and spacing evaluation. Since 2014, he has served as Exploration and Development Manager for BlackBrush Oil & Gas, L.P. , in this position he manages the company’s exploration effort in new horizons and basins within Texas as well as development of the company’s legacy assets through BlackBrush’s team of Geologists. Mr. Koehler earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from Texas Christian University in 2008.
Director for Corporate Development & Finance
Mr. Murad has nearly 8 years of experience in the oil and gas industry. He began his career in Houston working as an analyst in the investment banking division of Citigroup and later joined RBC Capital Markets as an associate in 2010. Over that 5-year period he participated in M&A and Capital Markets transactions for both upstream and midstream companies that totaled nearly $20 billion. In 2013, he joined BlackBrush TexStar (“BBTS”) as Manager of Corporate Finance and served in that role until the company’s decoupling in 2014 and subsequent recapitalization with Ares Management. Mr. Murad holds a double major in Business Honors (BHP) and Finance from the University of Texas at Austin.
